New Linux Driver Enables MOST for Linux Ecosystem

The MOST® Cooperation – the standardization organization for the leading automotive multimedia network Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) – is pleased to announce that the Linux Mainline Kernel starting with Version 4.3 will include a MOST Linux driver. „The driver enables access to all MOST data types and supports the USB, MediaLB and I2C interfaces of MOST network interface controllers,“ said Dr. Wolfgang Bott, Technical Coordinator of the MOST Cooperation. „The driver supports standard Linux interfaces like ALSA (Audio), V4L2 (Video) and IP-based communication over the standard Linux Networking Stack.“ A presentation on MOST for Linux Ecosystem will be given at the MOST Interconnectivity Conference Asia on November 12, 2015 in Tokyo, Japan.

IHS projects that by 2020, Linux will lead the estimated 130 million unit in-vehicle-infotainment (IVI) market with a 41.3 percent share, taking 53.7 million units. Linux adoption is growing because it provides automotive designers with an open-source platform that allows them to maximize the reuse of existing work, while making their own incremental improvements. Additionally, Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) was built on top of a well-tested and stable Linux stack that is already being used in embedded and mobile devices. The combination of MOST and Linux provides a solution for the increasing complexity of IVI and ADAS, accelerating development via open-source software and the automotive-industry-proven MOST networking technology.

A fast and reliable network infrastructure is necessary to achieve the promise of the connected car. Integrating this into the architecture for an open, common automotive platform will benefit the global car market. Inclusion of this driver in the Linux Mainline Kernel simplifies the task of making all the components in an infotainment system of a car seamlessly work together.

About MOST Technology
MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) is a multimedia networking technology optimized for use in cars and other applications. It enables the transport of high Quality of Service audio and video together with packet data and real-time control over a single transmission medium. MOST can use plastic optical fibers (POF), coax based electrical physical layer, and shielded and unshielded twisted pair (STP/UTP) copper wires that meet automotive environmental requirements. Today, MOST is used in over 190 car models as the communication backbone for their information and entertainment equipment.

About MOST Cooperation
The MOST Cooperation (MOSTCO) is the organization through which MOST Technology is standardized and refined so that it continues to stay abreast of the latest industry requirements. It consists of international carmakers and key component suppliers. They have joined together to work with the MOST Technology and to contribute to its innovation. The MOST Cooperation is prepared to embrace efforts to further develop and standardize the technology for other industries and to establish the corresponding work structures. The MOST Cooperation was founded in 1998 to standardize MOST Technology as a global standard for multimedia networking. Audi, BMW, Daimler, HARMAN and Microchip Technology are its core partners and constitute its Steering Committee. For more information see http://www.mostcooperation.com.
